Tesla's EU Registrations Rebound 52.7% in August — Chinese Rivals Grow Far Faster
Tesla's EU new-vehicle registrations rose 52.7% year-over-year to 12,547 units in August — but Chinese rivals BYD, Chery and Leapmotor grew far faster over the same period, reshaping the competitive landscape in Europe.
Tesla is showing signs of recovery after a weak year in Europe. August EU registrations rose 52.7% year-over-year to 12,547 units, lifting its EU market share from 1.2% to 1.8%. Cumulative January-August registrations reached 142,165 units, up 65.9% from a year earlier.
The problem is that Chinese EV makers are growing far faster. Over the same January-August period, BYD registered 177,752 vehicles (+163.0%), Chery (including its Jaecoo, Jetour and Omoda brands) registered 116,318 (+250.9%), and Stellantis affiliate Leapmotor registered 62,508 (+426.8%). Combined, these Chinese brands' EU market share expanded from 7.1% to 11.3%.
For shareholders, it's a mixed signal — Tesla's absolute registration numbers and recovery trend are positive, but the widening growth gap suggests Chinese rivals are closing in on Europe at an accelerating pace.
